Aviane

Aviane is a combination oral contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, two hormones that prevent pregnancy. It works by preventing ovulation, altering the cervical mucus to make it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus, and changing the uterine lining to prevent a fertilized egg from attaching. Aviane is primarily used for birth control, but it may also be prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles and treat conditions like acne and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Comprehensive Drug Guide

How Does Aviane Work?

Aviane prevents pregnancy through three mechanisms. It stops the release of an egg (ovulation) by suppressing the hormones that trigger the release of an egg from the ovaries. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and changes the uterine lining to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.

Common Dosages

  • Oral tablets: 21 active tablets containing 0.1 mg levonorgestrel and 0.02 mg ethinyl estradiol, plus 7 inactive (placebo) tablets.

Typical Dosing

  • For contraception: Take one active tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by one inactive tablet daily for 7 days. A new pack should be started after the completion of the 28-day cycle.

Typical Dosing

FDA Approved Indications

  • Contraception to prevent pregnancy

Who Shouldn't Take Aviane?

  • Known hypersensitivity to ethinyl estradiol, levonorgestrel, or any component of the formulation.
  • History of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack.
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • Liver disease.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers.

Advice From The Pharmacist

  • Take Aviane at the same time every day to maintain consistent hormone levels and maximize its effectiveness.
  • If you miss a dose, refer to the patient information leaflet for guidance on what to do based on how many pills were missed. Backup contraception (such as condoms) may be needed if doses are missed.
  • Be aware that Aviane does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs); use barrier methods like condoms for protection against STIs.
  • Some medications, such as antibiotics and certain seizure medications, may reduce the effectiveness of Aviane. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking.
