What You’ll Need
First, gather all of your supplies before you start. You should have the following prepared:
🧪 Testosterone vial
💉 Drawing syringe
🩹 Insulin (SQ) syringe
🗡️ IM & SQ needles
🧼 Alcohol swabs × 2
🧤 Gloves (optional)
🗑️ Sharps container
Verify Your Medication
Now, perform a quick safety check by ensuring the following:
- Is the liquid crystal clear?
- Hold the vial to light - the liquid must be free of particles.
- Does the label match?
- Confirm name, strength, and expiration date.
- No rush, take your time.
- Never rush your injection; take your time and relax.
Draw Up Your Dose (Filling Your Syringe)
1.) Wash your hands thoroughly and dry them.
2.) Use an alcohol swab on the vial top; let it air-dry for ~10 s.
3.) Pull the drawing-syringe plunger to the exact mL mark.
4.)To load up the syringe:
a.) Insert the needle into the vial through the top.
b.) Lightly press on the back of the needle plunger to expel a small amount of air.
c.) Invert the vial upside down with the needle still in (so the needle is going up into the inverted top of the vial).
d.) Pull back on the plunger slowly until the syringe is filled to the exact mL dose you are instructed to take.
5.) If there are any air bubbles in the syringe, tap them out and expel them back into the vial.
6.) Remove draw needle from syringe, discard in sharps container, screw on injection needle (For IM injection Only)
a.) For SQ injection, follow the steps below
Optional: Backloading Your Subcutaneous (SQ) Syringe
Only needed if you prefer an insulin syringe for subcutaneous shots.
1.) Pull the insulin-syringe plunger all the way out of the barrel - don’t touch the shaft or tip.
2.) Hold the draw-syringe over the open insulin barrel container; push medication into the insulin barrel.
3.) Slowly and carefully reinsert the plunger into the insulin syringe barrel until it is fully seated and aligned, taking care not to dislodge or damage the needle or rubber stopper.
4.) You’re now ready to inject with your insulin syringe.
Site Preparation
Now it is time to choose & prep your injection area:
- Intramuscular sites: hip (ventrogluteal), thigh (vastus lateralis), or shoulder (deltoid).
IM injection is the method for our default injection kits that are mailed out with your prescription.
- Subcutaneous sites: abdomen (≥ 2″ from belly button) or outer, upper thigh.
SQ sites are only for backloaded insulin syringes.
Note: Make sure to rotate your injection sites each cycle. For example, if you used your left thigh last time, use your right thigh today, or vice versa.
Finally, swab your skin with an alcohol swab and let it air-dry for ~10 seconds.
Injection Techniques
Intramuscular Injection (IM)
1.) Hold the syringe at 90° to the skin.
2.) Insert fully, and gently pull back on the plunger (aspirate) for 2 seconds. If no blood appears, proceed.
a.) If you see blood in the syringe, carefully remove it and try again in a different spot.
3.) Push the plunger slowly (count to 10).
4.) Withdraw and press gauze firmly.
Subcutaneous Injection (SQ)
1.) Pinch a skin fold.
2.) Hold the syringe at 45°.
3.) Insert quickly; inject over 5 s.
4.) Withdraw at the same angle; press gauze gently.
Aftercare
