Risks and Warnings of Cefdinir

  • Allergic Reactions: In rare cases, Cefdinir may cause severe allergic reactions, possibly resulting in anaphylaxis. Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. One must discontinue using Cefdinir immediately and seek emergency medical help if they experience these symptoms.
  • Antacids or Iron Supplements Interaction: Taking antacids or iron supplements may reduce the effectiveness of Cefdinir. So, it is advised to take Cefdinir at least 2 hours before or after taking these medications.
  • Kidney Disease: Cefdinir is eliminated from the body by the kidneys, so people with kidney disease may need to take a smaller dose to avoid accumulation and potential toxicity.
  • Superinfections: Extended use of Cefdinir may result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, leading to secondary infections (known as superinfections), such as fungal infections in the mouth or vagina.
  • False Positive in Urine Glucose Test: Cefdinir may cause a false-positive result in the urine glucose (sugar) test. Therefore, a different form of testing may be required while on this medication.
  • Antidiarrheal Medication: If you develop diarrhea while taking Cefdinir, do not take anti-diarrhea products without the consultation of your healthcare provider, as certain drug-induced diarrheas may require specific treatment.
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Although Cefdinir is classified as pregnancy Category B (meaning it's likely safe in pregnancy), pregnant or nursing mothers should use the medication only if clearly needed, under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
