Comprehensive Drug Guide

How Does Besivance Work?

Besivance works by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes that bacteria need to replicate their DNA and divide. By blocking these enzymes, Besivance prevents bacterial replication, thereby reducing the bacterial load in the eye and helping to resolve the infection.

Common Dosages

  • 0.6% ophthalmic suspension

Typical Dosing

  • The usual dose is one drop of Besivance in the affected eye(s) three times daily (approximately 4 to 12 hours apart) for 7 days, or as directed by your healthcare provider.

FDA Approved Indications

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis (eye infections caused by susceptible bacteria)

Who Shouldn't Take Besivance?

  • Known hypersensitivity to besifloxacin, quinolones, or any other components of the formulation.

Advice From The Pharmacist

  • Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the medication is properly mixed.
  • Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to any surface (including the eye) to prevent contamination.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Besivance and wait at least 15 minutes after application before reinserting them, as the medication may interact with the lenses.
  • Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication to ensure the infection is fully treated.
