How Does Diflucan Work?
Diflucan works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a crucial component of fungal cell membranes. In doing so, it disrupts the functioning of the cell membrane and inhibits fungal growth.
What is Diflucan Used For?
Diflucan is mainly used for treating several types of fungal and yeast infections, such as thrush, cryptococcal meningitis, and vaginal yeast infections
Common Dosages
- Tablets: 50mg, 100mg, 150mg, 200mg
- Oral Suspension: 10mg/mL, 40mg/mL, 50mg/5mL, 200mg/5mL
Typical Dosing
FDA Approved Indications
- Vaginal candidiasis: A single oral dose of 150mg for uncomplicated cases.
- Thrush: 200mg as the first dose, followed by 100mg once daily for at least 3 weeks. Continue treatment for at least 2 weeks following resolution of symptoms.

It's also used off-label for ringworm, blastomycosis, coccidiomycosis, and cutaneous leishmaniasis
- Ringworm: 150mg once weekly for 4 to 5 weeks.
- Blastomycosis: 400 to 800mg once daily for 6 to 12 months
- Cutaneous leishmaniasis: 200mg orally daily for 6 weeks
Pediatric Dosing
- Pediatric dosing of Diflucan depends on the type of infection it's used to treat and the child's weight. Always follow the doctor's instructions.
- Longer courses of treatment may be necessary for some types of infection.
- Monitor children for possible side effects, such as stomach upset or rash.
Who Shouldn't Take Diflucan?
- Have allergic reactions to Diflucan or other antifungal medicines
- Suffer from liver disease or heart disease.
- Are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant.
- Take certain medications, such as cisapride and pimozide, because of the risk of serious cardiac events.
