How Does SUMAtriptan Work?
Sumatriptan is a 5-HT1 receptor agonist, or 'triptan,' which functions as a vasoconstrictor. It achieves its therapeutic effects by binding to 5-HT1B/1D receptors located on intracranial blood vessels and sensory nerves of the trigeminal system.
Common Dosages
- Tablets: 25mg, 50mg, 100mg
- Nasal Spray: 5mg, 20mg
- Injection: 4mg, 6mg

- Migraine or cluster headache:
- Oral: 25 to 100mg, may repeat after 2 hours if needed; maximum 200mg/day.
- Injection: 1 to 6mg under the skin, repeated once after one hour if needed; maximum 12mg/day.
